Meditation is the true goal of yoga. In classic Patangali yoga, of the eight limbs of yoga the last four are deeper and deeper states of meditation. Yoga is defined as the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind or more simply put the quieting of the mind. There are many types of meditation. Focusing completely on the moment while walking or doing asana practice is a type of moving meditation. Many styles try to focus completely on one thought or thing without allowing the mind to wander. Some styles teach us to listen to the thoughts, resolve them and delve deeper into the true self and shed the layers of illusion, which distort our true reality. On a more basic level meditation can bring the mind to rest and wash away stress leaving us with a feeling of calmness and serenity.
