Asana is the physical, or athletic limb of yoga using postures and movements to strengthen and stretch the body. In the east asana is only one of several “limbs” that make up the complete practice of yoga. Here in the west (western hemisphere), generally to the dismay of the east, asana is all we know of yoga. Here it is generally thought of as only a form of exercise, which resembles twisting yourself into a pretzel. The classic definition of yoga is simply the quieting of the mind. Asana is just one tool used to achieve this. Classically, asana was taught first to teach the body and mind focus and discipline. Once this was achieved control of the breath was introduced.
